William Handshew Jr. 89 of Newville passed away on Monday January 19, 2026, at his home.
He was born on February 10, 1936 in Oakville, a son of the late William and Hazel E. (Helm) Handshew. William married Hazel L. Devor on April 7, 1962. She preceded him in death on June 14, 2015.
William worked as a custodian at the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, from where he retired. He enjoyed Christmas lights and coin collecting.
He is survived by his children Naomi Wickard and husband Jimmy of Camarillo, CA and David Handshew and wife Margaret of Newville; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great grandchildren; six sisters Janet Grove and husband Albert, Mary Wadle and husband Wayne, Zora Handshew, Hazel Kunkleman and husband Ronald, Juanita Gail Crumling and husband Calvin, Angela Handshew, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife of 53 years, William was preceded in death by three daughters Jane Middaugh, Catherine Savage, Mary Handshew; son Frank Ridley; and brothers Bobbie, Walter, Paul, Kenneth, and Wayne.
His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday January 28, 2026 at Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc., Shippensburg. The Rev. John Hurst will officiate. He will rest in peace at Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle. Viewing will be one hour prior to the service on Wednesday morning at the funeral home.
