Listen to Obituary

Tony A. Stoops, a child of God, 65, of Chambersburg, went to be with his Lord and Savior the afternoon of Saturday, December 27, 2025.

He was born on August 31, 1960 in Chambersburg, a son of the late Shover W. “Bill” and Helen R. Yeager Stoops.

Tony was a graduate of Shippensburg University and taught American History for 30 years from 1989 to 2019 at the Shippensburg Area Senior High School. In his earlier years, he attended New Guilford Brethren in Christ Church.

Tony had a lifelong love of sports and competition. An accomplished athlete, he enjoyed playing volleyball, golf, softball, and basketball. He was an avid Washington Wizards fan. Tony was also dedicated to the Chambersburg YMCA, where he participated in numerous events and even earned the “Thanks for not playing squash” award. He loved the band Kiss and enjoyed morning breakfasts with his golf buddies. Tony was truly a one-of-a-kind person who will be dearly missed by those who knew him. While on this earth, he greatly missed his father and is now reunited with him in Heaven. His two greatest accomplishments in life were being a teacher and a caretaker to his beloved mother.

Tony is survived by his uncle, Denton “Uncle Dick” Swisher; cousins, Sandy Curfaman and Vicki Gourley; two nephews, Brandon Elliott and Shawn Stoops; one niece, Kristyn Stoops Shank; and second cousin and close friend, Gary L. (Barbara) Keller.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two siblings, Larry E. Stoops and Beverly Elliott.
