Ruth Reese Meily embraced life with a sharp mind, a generous heart, and an enduring sense of humor. Born in a farmhouse near Shippensburg, PA, she was one of nine siblings raised on a working farm, where she learned the values of resilience, hard work, and community. She carried those lessons with her throughout her life, earning degrees from Shippensburg High School, Shippensburg University, and later a master's from Millersville University.

For 27 years (21 of them in the Penn Manor School District), Ruth was a dedicated educator who shaped the minds of countless students. She approached teaching with patience, intelligence, and an appreciation for the importance of both learning and laughter.

Beyond the classroom, Ruth and her husband, Richard M., built a home filled with love, lively conversations, and a steady supply of humor as they raised their five children in Marticville, PA. They loved growing old together, cherishing simple joys and grand adventures. They traveled across the United States and to England, but some of their happiest memories were the summer trips they took with their children to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

A lifelong learner, Ruth was an avid reader who loved discussing books as much as recommending them. She had a deep passion for politics and was always ready for a thoughtful debate or a lively discussion about current events. She believed in staying informed, speaking her mind, and engaging in conversations that mattered.

Later in life, one of her greatest joys was spending time with her great-grandchildren, watching them grow and marveling at the world through their eyes. She made the most of every visit, sharing stories, laughter, and love with the newest generation of her family.

She was happiest when her hands were busy, whether tending to her garden, quilting, or volunteering in her church and community. She valued kindness, meaningful work, and never taking life too seriously. In her later years, she attended Hempfield Church of the Brethren, where she found connection and purpose in her faith.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Richard, her daughter Diane, and her siblings Anna Mae, Martin, Oliver, Chester, and Lucille. She is survived by her children Dave, Betsy, Sue, and Pam, as well as eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her sister Doris and brothers Cyrus and Richard.

Her legacy is one of warmth, wisdom, and curiosity. She would want those who knew her to carry on with kindness, laughter, and an appreciation for life's simple joys and to never pass up the chance for a good book, a great debate, or a moment with family.

Graveside Services will be held on Saturday, May 9th at 11:00 AM at Otterbein Cemetery, Newburg. All are welcome to attend.
