Richard Lee Horst

July 24, 1958 — June 20, 2025

Shippensburg

Richard “Rich” Lee Horst, of Shippensburg, PA entered into eternal rest after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He passed away at Hershey Medical Center on Friday, June 20, 2025 at the age of 66, surrounded by his loving family. He was born July 24, 1958 in Chambersburg, PA to Wayne Leroy Horst Sr. and Martha “Patty” Vermont (Helm) Horst.

Rich wanted his family to know that he deeply loved them and was so incredibly proud of them. He was happiest when he was spending time with his family and making them laugh. He received a precious gift of a kidney from his brother Ray, 44 years ago and greatly appreciated this second chance at life. As a kidney transplant recipient, he was able to participate in the Transplant Olympic Games, which took him to various states and countries where he won numerous medals. He enjoyed playing softball in his younger years and was highly competitive, a trait that will continue to live on in his children. He enjoyed his Roadrunner, going to car shows and cruise-ins, as well as the NHRA. He enjoyed working on puzzles and often competed with his children to see who could place the most pieces. He most recently was attending Messiah United Methodist Church and found comfort in this, especially as his health declined. He was a member of The Hub City Club, The Minnequa Social Club, and Oscar Hykes American Legion where he enjoyed sharing a beer with his friends and making them laugh. Rich never met a stranger and could easily find a commonality with anyone he encountered. His humor and laugh will be greatly missed by his family.

He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Trudy Jean (Mowery) Horst; sister, Brenda (Bob) Derick; brother, Marlin (Brenda) Horst; son, Dexter (Ashleigh) Horst; daughter, Sheena (Jordan) Miller; niece Amy Horst and nephew Tim Derick, as well as his precious grandpuppies; Scribbles, Emmie, and Maisie. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers Wayne Horst Jr. and Ray Horst.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the family’s convenience, with details to follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Penn State Cancer Institute, Penn State Health, Penn State Development, 100 Crystal Drive, P.O. Box 852, Hershey, PA 17033.
