N. Mildred Wetzel, 97, previously of Cumberland Avenue, Shippensburg, and a resident of Elmcroft Assisted Living, Shippensburg, died Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at Elmcroft.
Born August 24, 1917, in Waynesboro, Franklin County, she was a daughter of the late Jesse Galen and Albie Good Newcomer. She was the wife of Kenneth Gover Wetzel whom she married June 12, 1937 at the First Brethren Church, Waynesboro. They celebrated 70 years together before he deceased on January 2, 2008.
As a young child, Mildred’s family moved to a small farm near Good’s Dam and later moved to Christy Good’s farm. She attended school at Mount Vernon (grades 1-8) and Washington Twp. (grades 9-10), and was a 1935 graduate of the Waynesboro High School. She was a member of the Messiah United Methodist Church, Shippensburg. She had a strong love of God and her church and an enduring love for her family. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, and cooking, especially baking pies.
Mildred is survived by one son, Kenneth Gary Wetzel and his wife Diane, of Parkesburg; a daughter-in-law, Carol Wetzel of Greensburg; five grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Douglas E. Wetzel; two brothers, Christian Galen and Robert Good Newcomer; and a sister, Abigail Newcomer Shockey.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Inc., Shippensburg with the Rev. Dr. Francis H. Norton officiating. Private burial will be in the Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro. A visitation will be held one half hour prior to the service.
