Lawrence A. "Mick" McNaughton

Listen to Obituary

Lawrence Albert “Mick” McNaughton, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, teacher, and coach, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2025, at the age of 82, at Wellspan York Hospital following a brief illness. He was surrounded by his loving family as he made his gentle transition Home.

Born on December 19, 1942, in Riverdale, Maryland, Mick was the son of Lawrence H. McNaughton and Grace A. (Shafer) McNaughton. He was raised on a farm in New Bloomfield, Pennsylvania, where his strong work ethic and love for the land were shaped from an early age.

A passionate athlete, Mick played sports throughout his school years and graduated from Perry Joint High School in 1960, where he was honored by his classmates as “Most Studious.” He continued his academic and athletic journey at Shippensburg University, where he played football, joined Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity, and earned his teaching certificate in physics and mathematics in 1965. He later completed his Master’s in Education in 1969.

Mick began his teaching career at Shippensburg Area Senior High School in 1965, where he taught physics and math with passion and precision until his retirement in 2001. Even after retiring, he continued sharing his love of teaching with students at Shippensburg University for two more years.

Mick's deep love for football led to a long and respected coaching career at Shippensburg High School, where he served as both Assistant and Head Coach. Under his leadership, three teams won Mid Penn Championships. His contributions were recognized when he was named Coach of the Year by both the Public Opinion and the Mid Penn Conference. His dedication earned him a place in the Shippensburg Area Senior High School (SASHS) Hall of Fame—not only for his coaching accomplishments, but also for his two decades of service as Athletic Director. Coaching went beyond wins and titles for Mick—he emphasized teamwork, sportsmanship, discipline, and character, and found special pride in the opportunity to coach his sons, Chad and Matt.

Mick is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Sandy (Heagy) McNaughton; his son, Matt McNaughton of Pittsburgh; and his daughter, Christie Johnson and her husband Ryan, of Shippensburg. He was preceded in death by his oldest son, Chad McNaughton, who passed away at age 38. Mick’s love for Chad lives on through his daughter-in-law, Eileen, and grandsons Ian and Cole. He is also survived by grandchildren Gracie, Jack, and Claire Johnson. All his grandchildren were his greatest pride and enduring legacy.

He is lovingly remembered by his sister, Coleene McNeillie of Massachusetts, as well as many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Smith, and brothers, Leon and Lewis McNaughton.

Mick’s legacy is woven through the lives of the students he taught, the athletes he coached, and especially in his cherished grandchildren. Known for his integrity, patience, kindness, and quiet strength, he left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
