John L Masney will be sadly missed by family and fondly remembered by friends. John, 89, formerly of Shippensburg, PA, passed away on June 29, 2026, his family with him at his recent residence in State College, PA. John was born to Lillian (Flenner) Lewandowski and Louis F Masney in Toledo, OH.
In his youth, John lived in Ft Lauderdale, FL. He grew up in southern CA remembering his wardrobe of white T-shirts and blue jeans. After high school, John served in the US Navy on a destroyer escort. He then entered employment with several manufacturing companies as he moved eastward. When he came to Shippensburg, he worked in purchasing at Ingersoll-Rand. Part of this work included four years in Aurora, CO, where he loved weekends spent skiing one day and getting on the golf course the next day. John continued his employment delivering roll backs across the country for Jerr-Dan. He ended his work years as a substitute rural carrier for the US Postal Service in Chambersburg, PA.
Married in 1985, John is survived by his wife, Cecelia Papoutsis Masney, her son, Gregory (Lisa) Rhinehart and his son, Rodney (Pam) Masney. Grandchildren include Zach (Jayson) Masney, Elizabeth (Dane) Bricker, Alexandra (Nick) Carlo, Cole Rhinehart, Kara Rhinehart, 3 great-grandchildren, a brother, Bill Masney of Houston, TX, brother-in-law James Papoutsis, sister-in-law Ettie Papoutsis and a large family of nieces and nephews.
John gave much laughter to those around him. He was clever and quietly competitive whether playing tournament bridge, bowling, cards or his favorite game of golf with some very special friends. John was a Phillies, Eagles and Penn State fan. He often baked a delicious rum cake for family and friends. He enjoyed traveling whenever possible, especially to NH, SC, southern CA and one trip to Greece. He leaves behind many wonderful memories.
Per his request, there will be no services with plans for a Celebration of Life in the future. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of choice, any local Hospice, Alzheimer’s group or to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 1000 Yverdon Dr, Camp Hill, PA 17011.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc., Shippensburg.
