John Edward Young, 87, of Roxbury, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2026 at the Mercy House in Chambersburg. He was born on August 13, 1938, in Harrisburg, PA, to the late Robert John Young and Lillian Snyder Young. He was additionally preceded in death by his brother, Robert Young.

John is survived by his loving wife, Teresa Eyler Young, whom he met in a way that perfectly reflected his lifelong love of animals-at a horse auction, when he struck up a conversation with her dog. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Dr. Lori Heyler (Michael Harm) and Ronald Harshman (Jill); and his cherished grandchildren, Aaron Harshman, Hannah Harm, Ethan Harshman, and Ryan Harm; his son Michael Young, his niece Beverly Lefebre; and nephew Rev. Dr. Frederick Young (Kara).

John was a skilled and dedicated painting contractor and took great pride in his work. Among his most notable accomplishments were painting both the Pennsylvania Governor’s Mansion and the Eisenhower Farm, achievements he spoke of with well-earned pride.

In retirement, John discovered a passion for woodworking. He spent countless hours crafting furniture, picture frames, and decorative pieces, many of which became treasured items in the homes of family and friends. He also had a deep love for racing and once competed in Formula One car racing. John delighted in sharing stories from those thrilling years and revisiting the tracks where he had raced, reliving memories that never lost their excitement.

Above all, John loved his family, his dogs and the folks at Shippensburg Starbucks who gave him cream for his cats. When Teresa became involved in dog rehoming and rescue work, John met the many disruptions-missed meals, changed plans, and extra responsibilities-with patience, humor, and grace, always supporting her efforts with quiet devotion. He had the love and willingness to take in and love animals as much as Teresa. They were quite the team in that regard.

John Edward Young will be remembered for his craftsmanship, his stories, his kindness, and his unwavering love for those closest to him. His legacy lives on in the work of his hands, the memories he shared, and the family he held dear.
