Jane Garling Hubley passed peacefully into glory on Friday, March 20, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was 99 years old.
Born on January 12, 1927, in Walnut Bottom, PA, she was the daughter of Jacob Clark Lesher and Mary Ott Lesher. She was a 1945 graduate of Shippensburg Area High School, after which Jane went on to graduate from the Thompson Business School in Harrisburg, PA as a medical secretary. In 1950 she married the love of her life, William (Bill) Garling, following him to Indiana where he served in the US Army at Camp Atterbury. In 1952 they returned to live in Shippensburg, where they raised their family and where Bill continued to work at his family business, Valley Pride Baking Company, until his death in 1983.
In addition to the challenge of raising, loving, and disciplining her 6 children (especially the 3 boys), Jane always found time to enjoy her church family, extended family, and many close friends. She enjoyed time spent at the beach and the yearly week spent at Central Manor Camp in Washington Boro, PA. Jane was an avid spectator of all sports and lamented the end of football season particularly each year. For years she was a regular sight downtown each morning walking with her friends Becky Campbell, Linda Ciavarella, and Helen Cressler – a walk that usually ended with coffee and a biscuit at McDonalds. A 70-year member of The Presbyterian Church, Shippensburg, she taught Sunday School, led Bible studies, served on many committees and as an ordained Elder in the Session of the church. Jane shared her gifts of service and hospitality generously with all. She loved to prepare and serve food for friends and family. It is estimated that she mixed and brewed over 10,000 gallons of Lemon Blend and coffee throughout her years as coffeetime hostess for her congregation, in addition to being well-known for the hamwiches and many delicious soups that she provided while working at the Valley Pride Snack Bar.
In 1999, Jane married John E. Hubley of Shippensburg. Together they shared 10 years of enlarging the family, traveling to new places, and making wonderful memories, until his death in 2010.
Jane is survived by her children: Catherine G. Shenk and husband Thomas of Newburg, Michael W. Garling and wife Therese of Mechanicsburg, Joan G. Wirick and husband Dwight of Carlisle, Timothy E. Garling of Shippensburg, and Stacy G. Hutchison and husband Timothy of Newburg; her stepson, John M. Hubley and wife Susan of Camp Hill; 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren, and by her brothers David Lesher and wife Sally, of New Buffalo and James Lesher of Shippensburg. She was preceded in death by her husbands William Garling and John Hubley, her son, H. Scott Garling, and her great grandson Thomas Wesley Jackson.
A Celebration of Life for Jane will be held on Thursday, March 26, 2026 at 11:00 AM at The Presbyterian Church, 12 South Prince Street, Shippensburg, with Pastor Gary Rebok officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Jane will be privately laid to rest at Spring Hill Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to The Presbyterian Church, Shippensburg or to Central Manor Camp, 798 Central Manor Road, Washington Boro, PA 17582.
While she will be greatly missed, her family is blessed with many memories of her life, much laughter that was shared with her, and the knowledge that she is now with her Lord in Heaven looking up old friends who have gone before, seeing beautiful sights with new eyes, and enjoying coffee that never gets cold.
