Jane L. Bender

Jane L. Bender, 71, of Newburg, passed away the morning of Tuesday, January 6, 2026 at the Mercy House of Chambersburg, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on October 19, 1954 in Newburg, a daughter of the late Charles and Betty Gabler Gardner. She married Richard L. Bender on October 8, 1977.

Jane was a 1972 graduate of Shippensburg Area High School and retired as a postmaster from the United States Postal Service in Pleasant Hall. Prior to, she worked as an office manager for 20 years at Valley Medical Group/Branch Creek Physicians. She was also a faithful member of Newburg United Methodist Church.

Jane enjoyed camping trips and bird watching, as well as working in her garden, canning, and baking. A truly selfless person, she always put the needs of others first. Nothing meant more to her than time spent with her family and friends; she took every opportunity she had to spoil her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Richard L. Bender of Newburg; three children, Emily (Jay) Sharpe, Curtis (Alyson) Bender, and Daniel (Julianna) Bender, all of Newburg; six grandchildren, Bryce Bender, Owen Bender, Avery Bender, Clara Bender, Rachel Sharpe, and Charles Sharpe; and one sister, Bonnie (Harvey) Shearer of Shippensburg.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two siblings, Tony A. Gardner and Christine A. Varner.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 13, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Newburg United Methodist Church with Pastor Kevin Brophy officiating. Burial will follow at Otterbein Cemetery. A viewing will be held Monday, January 12, 2026 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc. and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the Church.
