George W. Wagner, Jr., 94, of Shippensburg, departed this life the evening of Thursday, April 23, 2026 at the Chambersburg Hospital.
He was born on November 25, 1931 in West York, the son of the late George W. and Bessie L. (Werner) Wagner, Sr. George was a 1950 graduate of West York High School and a 1958 graduate of the former Shippensburg State Teachers College. He married Helen Louise (Hykes) Wagner on May 26, 1956, in the Messiah United Methodist Church, Shippensburg. She preceded him in death on August 15, 2024.
George was a United States Army Veteran who served during the Korean War and was awarded the Bronze Star. He worked as an elementary school teacher at Chambersburg Area School District for 36 years and taught at Scotland Elementary, where he was head teacher/principal. In retirement, George was a majority/minority inspector for Cumberland County Board of Elections-East Ward Shippensburg.
He was a member of Franklin County Chapter School Retirees and National Education Association. In Shippensburg, he was a member of the Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post #223, Durff-Kuhn VFW Post #6168, and Cumberland Valley Masonic Lodge #315. He was a faithful member of Messiah United Methodist Church for 67 years and belonged to A.A.S.R. Harrisburg Consistory. George also volunteered for both the Luhrs Performing Arts Center and Shippensburg Community Fair.
George was known for his beautiful flower and vegetable gardens.
He is survived by one daughter, Lucinda W. Jacoby and husband R. Michael of York; one grandson, Stephen M. Jacoby of York; one brother-in-law, William O. Hykes of Shippensburg; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and spouse, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Mildred Stump, Frances Rudisill, Isabelle Busser, and Sally King.
His funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc., Shippensburg. There will be a private graveside service, held at Spring Hill Cemetery, Shippensburg. Pastor Laura Kincaid and The Rev. Dr. Francis H. Norton will officiate. There will be no public viewing or visitation.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Scotland Elementary School PTO, 3832 Scotland Main St., Chambersburg, PA 17202 or Messiah United Methodist Church, 30 S. Penn St., Shippensburg, PA 17257.
