Gary L. Porter, 87, of Palm City, FL., and formerly of Shippensburg, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 16, 2025 surrounded by his loving wife and two daughters.
Born Saturday, October 9, 1937 in Shippensburg, Cumberland County, he was a son of the late George D. and Edith Holtry Porter.
He was a 1956 graduate of the Shippensburg High School. He served in the United States Marine Corps. He was co-owner of Porter Brothers Furniture for 43 years.
Gary was a member of the Prince Street United Brethren Church in Shippensburg, serving as grounds keeper. He served as Sunday School Superintendent, Lay Delegate, and Lay Leader. Gary also served on the Administrative Board, Personnel Commission Chairman, Chairman of the Porter Fund, and sang in the Choir. He organized Southern Gospel Programs at various nursing homes in the area
Gary was a member of the First Baptist Church in Stuart, Florida, where he served as a deacon, usher, and on the greeting and finance committees. He also sang in the choir.
He was a former member of the Lions Club, Gideons, and a board member of the Children's Aid Society.
Gary is survived by his wife, Helen M. Lytle Porter; and two daughters, Leanne M. Porter-Wallis (William R. Wallis III), and Debbie L. Porter. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Loralei A. Wallis and Liam R. Wallis IV.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Galen L. Porter, Donald Porter, who passed away at three months old, Robert O. Porter and Jack E. Porter, and one sister Evelyn Porter-Perry.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 24, 2025 at 12:00 p.m. at Prince Street United Brethren Church, with Pastor John W. Shadle, Pastor Buck Summers, and Pastor Kurt Kimmel officiating. A viewing will be held at 11 am, one hour prior to the service on Saturday, at the church. Burial will be private in Spring Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Prince Street United Brethren Church, 17 N. Penn Street, Shippensburg, PA 17257.
