Garnet Duane Stum, 87, of Shippensburg, departed this life on the evening of Saturday, July 22, 2023, at WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital.
He was born on April 27, 1936, in Newville, a son of the late Louis E. and Hulda R. (Johnson) Stum. Duane was a 1954 graduate of Shippensburg High School. He earned a Bachelor’s degree from Villanova University, and a Master’s degree from the University of Colorado. Duane was a United States Navy veteran. He married Doris D. O’Donnell on July 19, in Maryland.
Early in life, Duane spent ten years at General Electric where he built weather satellites. He then worked for five years for the United States Postal Service in Harrisburg. The majority of Duane’s career was working as an electrical engineer for the United States Army at Fort. Ritchie, in Cascade, MD, retiring on October 3, 1998.
He was a member of the Shippensburg Lions Club and involved with the Cub Scout Pack #251, in Shippensburg for over seventy years. Duane held numerous positions on the Southampton Township Cumberland County Board of Supervisors over nineteen years. He was a longtime member of the Cleversburg United Methodist Church and the caretaker for the adjoining cemetery for many, many years.
In his free time Duane enjoyed being outdoors and active. He liked maintaining his property and those of his family. Duane enjoyed solving problems and was very skillful with his hands, be it electronics, construction, or anything mechanical. He could fix and build just about anything. Duane was also known for his sense of humor and love of ice cream and root beer. He also enjoyed going to the beach and playing golf.
In addition to his wife, Doris, he is survived by five children: Tracy Lee Stum and husband Sayak Mitra of Ventura, CA; Wendy Ann Stum and partner Anthony Cappetto of Queens, NY; Karen D. Lundy and partner Jalil Buti of Lewisberry, PA; Duane G. Stum and wife Peggy of Shippensburg; and Keith Killian of Shippensburg; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two brothers: D. Lewis Stum of Upper Strasburg, and Harlan Stum of Walnut Bottom; four sisters: Beulah Baum of Walnut Bottom; Patricia Arbegast of Carlisle; Rebecca Etter of Chambersburg; and Victoria Mathna of Shippensburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Duane “Sonny” was preceded in death by a brother, Lonnie.
His funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m., on Thursday, July 27, 2023, at the Cleversburg United Methodist Church, in Shippensburg. Pastor Jan Bye-Dickerson will officiate. Interment will follow in the Parklawns Memorial Gardens, in Chambersburg. Viewing will be one hour prior to the service on Thursday afternoon at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cleversburg United Methodist Church.
