Listen to Obituary

Dorothy “Pinky” (Morgan) Nye, 96, of Shippensburg, passed away the afternoon of Monday, January 12, 2026 at Green Ridge Village.

She was born on September 3, 1929 in Harrisburg, a daughter of the late Howard Harry and Gwennie Lee (Davies) Morgan. Everyone knew her as “Pinky”, a nickname she earned in childhood for loving to wear the color pink.

Dorothy was a 1947 graduate of Lemoyne High School and a 1951 graduate of Millersville University, where she obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in library science. Following college, Dorothy briefly worked as the librarian at the Scotland School for Veterans’ Children before starting a family with her husband, raising seven children. She also worked as a parts clerk for the family business, H&H Chevrolet Cadillac in Shippensburg, for 50 years, retiring at age 88.

Throughout her life, Dorothy was involved in the Shippensburg community. She was proud of the column she wrote in the late 1950s for the Shippensburg News-Chronicle entitled, “With the Women.” Dorothy was the first woman to sit on the Shippensburg Area School District School Board, a position she held for 12 years in the 1970s and 1980s. Over the years she was variously active with the Shippensburg (now Coy) Public Library, Cumberland Valley Habitat for Humanity and the Shippensburg Area Civil War Roundtable, and she was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church.

She traveled widely, was an avid reader and a terrific letter writer, took pride in family history and genealogy, and faithfully attended activities of her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by seven children, C. Richard Nye, Jr. and wife Y. Marie Derick of Newburg, Christy Nye Hoover and husband Andrew of Carlisle, Frank C. Nye and wife Ronda Palmer of Carlisle, Timothy M. Nye and wife Janice DuLaney of Richmond, VA, W. Mickey Nye and wife Phyllis Shields of Shippensburg, Sue Nye Scharfenberg and husband Ken of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Peter T. Nye and wife Jamie Lovell of Shippensburg; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, C. Richard Nye, Sr. who passed away on August 12, 1995, and by her infant granddaughter Rebecca Lee Nye.
