David Lynn Horst

David Lynn Horst, 76, of Shippensburg, passed away Tuesday, September 1, 2026 at the Mercy House of Chambersburg.

Born Wednesday, October 26, 1949 in Hagerstown, MD, he was a son of the late Leroy Paris and Frances Irene Mellott Horst.

David was of the Methodist Faith. He was a 1967 graduate of Clear Spring High School, Clear Spring, MD. David was a United States Army Veteran serving in Vietnam from 1970-1971, earning a Purple Heart and later retired as Master Sergeant from the Air Guard, West VA.

He retired from the Shippensburg University after 27 years in the Carpentry Shop with many acknowledgements for his craftsmanship. He was respected and loved by many who served and worked beside him.

David was a life member of the Durff-Kuhn VFW Post # 6168 and the Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post #223, and the Minnequa Social Club, all in Shippensburg.

In his spare time, he enjoyed golfing, collecting that-might-be-worth-something-someday items, and watching historical movies and documentaries.

He is survived by one daughter, Margaret Owais, Charlotte, NC; two step-daughters, Michele Rule, Chevy Chase, MD and Melissa (Scott) Mankamyer, Shippensburg, PA; seven grandchildren, Kevin (Heather) Diale, Jr., Louisville, KY, Katherine Diale, Charlotte, NC, Matthew Diale, Charlotte, NC, Mary Allyson Mankamyer (Kyler) Gutshall, Mia Mankamyer, Avery Mankamyer, all of Shippensburg, and Elizabeth Rule, Chevy Chase, MD; three great grandchildren, Ben Diale, Charlotte, NC, Charlotte Rule-Nelson, Arlington, VA, and Evelynn Gutshall, Shippensburg; five siblings, Steve Ardinger, Marlow, WV, Mary (Don) Clouser, Middletown, James Horst, Jacksonville, FL, Terry Horst, Hagerstown, MD, and Jeffrey (Vickie) Horst, Clear Spring, MD; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley JoAnn Pittman Horst who passed away February 3, 2021; one brother, Arlan Martin and sister-in-law, Linda Ardinger.

A private graveside service will be held at Ft. Indiantown Gap National Cemetery with full military honors.
