Catharine Louise Stewart passed on Monday, April 13th, 2026. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandmother, cherished sister, aunt, and a dear friend to many. Her life was rooted in family, faith, resilience, and unwavering love.
She was born on September 28th, 1934, in Greene Township, Franklin County to the late Charles Leon and Mary Catharine King Pyne. Catharine was raised on the family farm in Newburg alongside her ten brothers and sisters, where she learned the values of hard work, togetherness, and perseverance. She graduated from Shippensburg High School in 1952 and went on to attend Carlisle Nursing School, earning her degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1953, a role that reflected her natural instinct to care for others.
Before graduating, she met the love of her life while working at the Ho-Jo’s rest stop along the Pennsylvania Turnpike, she scooping ice cream with her bright smile, and he pumping gas. What began as a simple meeting became a lifelong love story. They were married on November 22, 1952, and built a beautiful life together, including four daughters, as well as a milk hauling business in Newburg.
Family was everything to Catharine. She treasured time spent together, whether it was summers at the Jersey Shore or the Outer Banks, a vacation to Hawaii, trips to the family cabin, or simply watching her grandchildren grow. She especially loved traveling with her husband, exploring cities along the East Coast, and watching baseball games together.
She found joy in life’s simple moments, cooking, visiting local orchards, baking pies so good her brothers would fight over them, and tending to her backyard filled with flowers, trees, and birds. Her home was always a place of warmth and love.
She was talented with her hands and loved cooking, sewing for her daughters, crocheting, and creating heartfelt blankets for her grandchildren, each one a lasting symbol of her care. She was also an avid bowler, participating in a league for many years where she earned trophies and built lasting friendships. Her bond with her sisters remained a constant and cherished part of her life.
She was a member of the former Amberson Presbyterian Church. Catharine later attended the Church of God in Newburg during her children’s upbringing, grounding her life in faith and prayer.
Catharine loved deeply, worried endlessly about her family, and lived 91 beautiful years devoted to their care and well-being. She was strong, stubborn, and just the right amount of sassy wrapped in grace, style, and charm.
She is survived by her daughters, Tammy (Ronald) Johnson and Donna S (Christopher); her grandchildren, Marie, Mark, Patrick, Jack, Max, Ella, Maia, and Sadie; her great-grandchildren, Samantha, Dakota, Joy, Ryan Jr., Mackenzie, Mackayla, Abigail and Hannah; two great-great-grandchildren, KayLynn and Kaysen; her sister, Janet (Fred) Culbertson, her brother John (Debbie) Pyne; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family who loved her dearly.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Donald Stewart; her daughters, Joy Traini and Sharon Valigorsky; her grandson, Ryan Traini; and eight brothers and sisters, Charles H. Pyne, Betty Cromwell, Iva Jean Piper, Donald Pyne Sr., Jay Pyne, Robert Pyne, Fred Pyne, and an infant sister Helen Marie Pyne.
She will be deeply missed, but the love she gave and the memories she created will live on in all who knew her.
A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium Inc., with The Rev. Dr. Mark Valigorsky officiating. Burial will be private in Otterbein Cemetery. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 381056.
