Carole Jeanne Horneys passed away on September 28, 2024, at the age of 94 at Menno Haven in Chambersburg. The youngest of five children, she was born in Waterloo, Iowa on July 5, 1930, to the late Earl and Effie Strand Cortright. Her brothers, Kenneth and Homer Cortright and sisters, Joyce Poyner and Donna Poyner preceded her in death.
Carole is joining her husband of almost 69 years, David Chris Horneys, who passed away on February 22, 2023. David and Carole lived at Menno Haven in Chambersburg for the last 10 years and were members of Park Avenue United Methodist Church.
David and Carole met at John Deere in Waterloo, Iowa, and they were married on April 17, 1954. Their marriage blessed them with two children, John and Jill. John Warren Horneys, born March 7, 1956, passed away June 1, 2009. Their second child, Jill Horneys Roach Brown, was a graduate of Shippensburg Area Senior High School in 1978. Jill moved to Kentucky to earn her bachelor’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University and MBA from Xavier University. She resides in Lexington, Kentucky, and Pompano Beach, Florida.
In addition to her husband, David, her son, John, and three stillborn grandsons preceded her in death. All will be together for eternity at Spring Hill Cemetery in Shippensburg, PA.
Surviving descendants include her daughter, Jill Horneys Roach Brown, a daughter-in-law, Wendy Foster Horneys, seven grandchildren, Christina Roach Thompson, (Dr. Glen) Thompson, Jessica Caroline Roach, David R. Horneys, Jonathan (Callie), Horneys, Benjamin Horneys, Bethany Horneys, (Jason) McGuire, and Elliot Horneys, three great- grandchildren, Selah Morgan Thompson, Paisley Horneys and Oaklyn Horneys, and favorite niece, Linda Poyner Kohn and her family in Orlando, Florida.
Carole debuted her professional modeling career at age 90 when she starred in the Keystone Ford commercial as the “Fast Car Grandma” in her white racing suit. Her spunky attitude, love and laughter will be sorely and forever missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Menno Haven Clubhouse at 1500 Northfield Drive, Chambersburg, PA 17201 on Tuesday, October 1, 2024 for friends and family from 5 to 7 p.m.
A private memorial service and burial will be held at Spring Hill Cemetery.
